Two dates for one film

Release years and ceremony years are related, but they are not the same field.

Read which year is requested

An awards ceremony may celebrate films released in the previous calendar year. A later international release can add another date. Never assume a familiar ceremony year is the answer to a release-year question.

Krillion’s initial movie collection focuses on Academy Best Picture nominees and winners, using the earliest release year recorded in the source snapshot. The boundary text makes that convention visible during play.

Keep the evidence separate

Use the Academy database to check an award category and result. Use a release record to check a date. Neither fact should silently stand in for the other.

Wikidata can contain several release statements, including premieres in different countries. Taking the earliest recorded value is a reproducible editorial rule, but it does not make the source complete or infallible.

Practise with a timeline

Place a few films you know on a rough decade line. Then check their exact dates before using them as examples near a decade boundary.

This exercise is especially useful for films you saw years after their original release. Your own viewing year can be a strong memory cue and still be irrelevant to the question.
